About the client

DMG MORI is a global innovation leader in metal cutting, positioning itself as the first global full liner for the additive manufacturing of metal components.

What did TECHNIA do?

DMG Mori joined forces with TECHNIA to optimize the overall production process of selective laser melting (SLM) manufacturing.

What were the results?

DMG MORI makes full use of TECHNIA’s comprehensive and efficient system that covers all demands as well as flexible usability in the various different fields of application.

“From the initial idea to preliminary simulation models all the way to finished products that have been produced in series and tried and tested in the field.”

DMG MORI sees a clear future ahead of them – a future in which metal components are not just lathed, milled or laser-cut but are also printed.

Vision

Since 2013, when it comes to additive manufacturing, DMG MORI has been using laser metal deposition welding with a powder nozzle to great success.

With the integration of REALIZER’s products, DMG MORI has opened up access to ‘selective laser melting’ (SLM), a specific 3D printing technique, for its customers.

As a pioneer in using SLM for metals, the manufacturer positioned itself as the first global full liner for the additive manufacturing of metal components. By systematically continuing to develop the additive manufacturing process, both using a powder nozzle and a powder bed, DMG MORI is driving these next-generation technologies forward.

Solution

One Team

In order to optimize the overall production process of SLM manufacturing, DMG MORI has joined forces with TECHNIA.

Together, they not only developed a 3D solution which is utilized by DMG MORI but also offer their joined expertise to other companies. Now, additive manufacturing is no longer restricted to plastics, it is increasingly being used in the serial production of metal components as well.

But 3D printing by itself is not all that is needed. Just as in conventional manufacturing with CNC machines, this also means managing a complex process, which ultimately produces high-precision components that are of immaculate quality and can be reproduced.

Two strong players

On one side, DMG MORI, the largest manufacturer worldwide of devices for machining production processes, offers its clients machine and process solutions based on the concept of additive manufacturing. They have packaged together all the necessary expertise for this service in a strategic Expert Centre. In addition to DMG MORI’s own knowledge regarding metal cutting and the procedure of tool processing, its subsidiary, REALIZER, also contributes their skills as a manufacturer of 3D printers.

On the other side, TECHNIA acts as a connecting link, implementing software-based solutions that clients can use to manage the complex procedure of handling planning, management and even manufacturing processes.

TECHNIA is the driving force behind additive manufacturing and, as a partner of Dassault Systèmes, offers specialized software solutions that can map out the entire production process.

“Essentially, we supply a complete solution. You can construct the component with CATIA, manage the product data and teamwork with ENOVIA, carry out any preliminary simulations required with SIMULIA and use DELMIA as a virtual production facility”, explains Ralf Kirchheim, the man in charge of technology and solution strategies at TECHNIA.

“This means grouping together operational procedures, coordination processes and planning activities. This, in turn, means that there are fewer transmission errors and that the entire project can be implemented much more efficiently, quickly and therefore also more cost-effectively”, he continues.

When it comes to 3D printing metal components, it is the simulation software in particular that has an important role to play. In this way, the heat input of the components during the 3D production can be planned for in advance. Ultimately, when appropriate provision is made for these parameters, this software makes it possible to print good parts directly.

Gain

DMG MORI makes full use of TECHNIA’s comprehensive and efficient system that covers all demands as well as flexible usability in the various different fields of application.

But other companies benefit from the solution as well: “Working together with DMG MORI, we help clients around the world to develop their own individual and cost-effective production processes”, said Kirchheim.

“From the initial idea to preliminary simulation models all the way to finished products that have been produced in series and tried and tested in the field.” Clients can cooperate in real time with a cross-sector panel of experts, using cloud storage to work on data and models, thereby achieving their specified goal more efficiently.

By driving forward the additive manufacturing process and by establishing this collaboration with TECHNIA, DMG MORI has confirmed its development expertise and created a new future for the production of metal components.
